Sacroiliac joint dysfunction occurs when the sacroiliac joint—which connects the lower spine to the pelvis—becomes inflamed, unstable, or misaligned. This can irritate surrounding ligaments and nerves, causing pain in the lower back, buttocks, or legs. The discomfort may mimic other conditions, such as lumbar disc problems, making accurate diagnosis important.

Why It Happens

SI joint dysfunction can result from trauma, pregnancy, uneven leg length, arthritis, or repetitive stress on the joint. Over time, ligaments supporting the joint may become loose or inflamed, leading to pain and instability.
