Sciatica

Sciatica is pain that travels from your lower back down one leg, usually caused by pressure on a spinal nerve. It can feel sharp, burning, or electric, and may come with numbness, tingling, or weakness.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain starting in the lower back or buttock that radiates down the leg
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in one leg or foot
  • Pain that worsens with sitting, bending, or coughing

Why It Happens

Sciatica occurs when a nerve in the lower spine, often the sciatic nerve, becomes irritated or compressed. This can result from a herniated disc, bone spur, or narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis).

Diagnosis

  • Medical History Review – Discussing your symptoms and how they affect your daily activities.
  • Physical Exam – Checking muscle strength, reflexes, and range of motion.
  • Imaging Tests – X-rays or MRI scans help identify the source of nerve compression and guide treatment.

How We Treat It

Treatment focuses on relieving pain, improving mobility, and supporting daily activities.

Treatment options may include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Physical therapy and guided exercises
  • Epidural steroid injections
  • Minimally invasive procedures if needed
